The world of children’s literature is saddened by the passing of Patricia McKissack, Missouri’s beloved author of many, many children’s books. Ms. McKissack, who lived in Chesterfield, Missouri, died on April 7, 2017, four years after the death of her husband and co-author, Fredrick McKissack. Her son, Fredrick McKissack, Jr., said, “I think my mother died of a broken heart.

Among the most prolific children’s authors of African-American history, folklore and stories, Patricia and Fredrick McKissack published more than 100 books on African-American history and folklore. They won multiple honors, including a Newbery Honor and nine Coretta Scott King Author and Honor awards. In 2014, their work was recognized for its lasting contribution to literature with the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.

While we grieve her passing, we are forever enriched by her contributions to the world of literacy.
