MSC-IRA Scholarship Award



Professional Development Awards Committee

Scholarships in the amount of $250 each are available contingent upon funds. These scholarships are to be applied toward graduate courses taken in the area of reading or areas related to reading. Possible areas of study would include: reading, language arts, English, creative writing, children’s literature, reading disabilities, or any other fields in which reading is a key component.


1. Completed Bachelor’s Degree

2. Enrolled in a college/university graduate program (Master’s, Specialist or Doctoral level) in the field of reading or related area: reading, language arts, creative writing, children’s literature, reading disabilities, and other fields in which reading is a key component

3. Member of Missouri State Council/IRA for three years

4. Demonstrated need (will be given consideration)




  • B) Applicant secures two letters of support and submits them to the Local Council President.
  •     1) Letter of sponsorship from a local IRA or MSC-IRA member, indicating why the applicant should be considered for this scholarship.
  •     2) Letter of recommendation from a principal or co-worker, providing information about the applicant’s efforts and contributions in literacy.
  • C) Local Council President must print out this document, sign it, and have the local Membership Chairperson sign it to certify that the applicant is a member of the local council and has been approved by the local council.
  • D) Professional Development Committee reviews all applications with completed application packets.
  • E) Final selection of scholarship recipients will be the responsibility of the Professional Development Award Committee members followed by approval of the Executive Board of the MSC-IRA.
  • F) Recipients will have 12 months from the date the scholarship is awarded to apply the money toward the coursework.
  • G) The scholarship recipient will receive the funds when the Professional Development Awards Committee receives the transcript copy showing satisfactory completion of the course(s).  (see address below)
  • H) Each recipient must submit a brief report to the Professional Development Awards Committee describing the ways the coursework enhanced his/her professional growth.  This report must be submitted at the same time as the transcript showing completion of coursework.

Deadline for consideration for this scholarship is December 1.
