The Little Red Pen

Author and Illustrator: Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

Book Review by Mary Piazza

"Let’s get to work!" The Little Red Pen is ready and enlists the help of Stapler, Scissors, Pencil, Eraser, Pushpin, and Highlighter. Following the theme of the original Little Red Hen, the Little Red Pen’s work ethic is flawless while his colleagues just are not on board with the idea of working. Their excuses are very entertaining, and the pace of the book is frantic.

The work theme in this book is certainly a teachable moment and perfect for so many classroom discussions. The personification of the characters provides a perfect writing model.

This book spans many age levels with its entertaining illustration and its stance on work and cooperative effort.
