Guidelines for Reviewing for The Missouri Reader

Thank you for committing your valuable time to contribute to the publication process for The Missouri Reader (TMR) as a reviewer.  We have recently updated the process of reviewing manuscript submissions for TMR, and we are “Going Digital” through the use of Google Drive. Therefore, some changes are needed for the reviewing process.  Please feel free to ask for clarification regarding any of the aspects below.

  • Upon receipt of a request to review, respond with your intent to review or decline to review within 24 hours by responding to the initial email.  If we do not receive a response, we will send the request to another reviewer.  In this initial request, a link to a blind copy of the manuscript will be made available to you to help with your decision.

  • The turnaround time for a manuscript review is 2 weeks from the date of acceptance.  If you are unable to review the manuscript during that time period, please email Julie Bryant at as soon as possible.

  • You do NOT need to have a Google account to participate as a reviewer.  However, we will be utilizing Google Docs for all reviews.

  • You will be making comments to the author directly on the blind copy of the manuscript itself utilizing the comments feature in Google Docs.  Here’s a video to show you how.

  • When writing comments, please give specific feedback to the author, regardless of your recommendation.  Be honest, constructive, and helpful in your comments.  The comments will be made available to the author without editing (except to remove evidence of the reviewer’s identity).

  • After reviewing the manuscript, you will utilize the TMR Submission Recommendation Form to give your ratings, recommendation, and summary of your comments to the co-editors. You may add any additional comments directly to the co-editors on the recommendation form as well.

  • Upon submission of the form, your reviewing duties for this manuscript will be completed. Shortly thereafter, you will receive an email from Julie Bryant verifying receipt of the recommendation form and comments.

  • There is no need to email comments to either of the co-editors.  We will be able to access all of your feedback on the reviewed manuscript itself and the recommendation form.

  • The manuscripts you review will remain available to you for future reference.  However, manuscripts must remain confidential—do not share manuscripts you receive for review.

You will be given more specific information regarding the specific submissions you are asked to review in a direct email.

Thank you for all you do to support and encourage literacy educators in Missouri.

Julie Bryant, Ed.D.
